Maurice Baring (1874-1945) was an English man of letters who was a poet, novelist, essayist, dramatist, travel writer, and war correspondent. This pamphlet contains four essays written in 1896 by Baring when he attended the University of Hildesheim. The essays are written in French and were a school exercise for an examination in which French was an important subject. The following are the four essays: "Saint Bernard de Hildesheim," "Le Rosier de Hildesheim," "La Tentation de frere Ambroise de Hildesheim," and "Sensations de Hildesheim.". Signed by Author(s).

Edition limited to 25 numbered copies, printed by Stanley Morison and signed by the author, this copy with, loosely inserted, the manuscript note of the author's great-great-nephew Louis Jebb - "This copy belonged to Countess Beenckendorff [i.e. Sophie Benckendorff], and was given by her grand-daughter Nathalie Brooke to Louis Jebb 1 June 2005". "This is the house we used to know so well / This the front door, / And locked. Signed limited edition, number 16 of 100 copies signed by the author and printed on Japon paper. This copy contains the contemporary ownership inscription of Rowland Thomas Baring, the second Earl of Cromer and Maurice Baring's cousin, on the front free endpaper. The author's experience during the war inspired this collection of verse, which was first published in 1919. Baring laments the death of his friend Auberon Herbert, Captain Lord Lucas, in the Pindaric "In Memorium A. H.", which debuted in this collection. T. E. Lawrence commended Baring: "if ever a death poem has been good, it is yours. It takes me, each time I read it, absolutely by the throat. so simply sincere, and grievous, and splendid.
