DUST JACKET: Previous Owner Markings (Price Clipped); Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; Moderate Yellowing Due to Age; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. SYNOPSIS: The crowded troop train on its way to relieve Fort Humboldt wound through the desolate snowscape of Nevada, among the sombre pines, precipitous ravines and taxing gradients of one of the loneliest stretches of railroad in the West. But this was no ordinary mission, for in the year 1873 the Fort was not beset by an enemy who could be met in battle. This was a different and more dangerous enemy - different even from what the rescuers supposed. Nor was this an ordinary troop train, for in addition to a contingent of the US Cavalry, its complement included the Governor of Nevada, his niece, the daughter of the Fort's commander, and a US Marshal escorting one of the most wanted and lawless villains of the gold-fevered Old West. Some of those on board the train had reasons of their own for wishing to reach Fort Humboldt which they found it prudent to conceal. Some of them never did reach it, and by the time three coaches, lone survivors of disaster, steamed towards the top of Breakheart Pass in the country of the hostile Paiute Indians, the chips were down with a vengeance and some unexpected realignments had taken place. Alistair MacLean, venturing into Wild West territory, proves himself as much a master of suspense and action as he is in the world today. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
