The author delves into the county's physical landscape, tracing the courses of its rivers and examining the intricate geological formations that make up its soil. He also meticulously documents the county's history, particularly focusing on the fascinating development of manorial estates, and their impact on the lives of Essex residents. Through insightful analysis of the county's agricultural practices, the book offers a glimpse into the economic and social life of the people of Essex. The author examines the evolution of the county's farming techniques, from traditional wood-based fuel to the adoption of coal, and from the decline of the wool industry to the emergence of new industries like silk and straw-plait making. The book provides a vivid portrayal of the daily lives of Essex farmers, their struggles and successes, and the complex interplay of tradition and innovation that shaped their world. The book's exploration of the geology of Essex is particularly engaging, offering fascinating insights into the earth's history and the unique natural features that have shaped the county's landscape. This exploration of Essex's geological past, and its connections to the wider world, sheds light on the enduring forces that have shaped both the natural and human history of the region. Half Leather. Condition: Very Good binding. Wright and Buckingham's historical descriptions of various places in Belgium, the Rhine, Italy, Greece, and the Shores and Islands of the Mediterranean, with engraved illustrations by various artists. Complete with two volumes bound in one. Vol. I is complete with all 73 plates called for in the 'Contents,' though "Great Canal, and Antique Gothic House" [or "Ghent"] is bound in at Vol. II, p. 58, and "The City of Catania and Mount Etna" is bound in near Vol. II, p. 152. Vol. II is lacking pp. 25-32, and pp. 49-56, and also lacks the eight plates that would have been in those two signatures. This is quite possibly a binder's error, as there does not appear to be any explicit damage to the textblock at those locations; the binder also misplaces a number of plates, though most of these errors are simply a few pages off. Vol. I with all 73 plates. Vol. II with 73 of the 81 plates. Altogether with 146 of the 154 plates, which includes the frontispieces and additional title pages, engraved. Some foxing to the plates; previous owners' names on the front pastedown and recto of the initial frontispiece lacking front endpaper. Surface wear to the joints, spine, and corners of the boards. Some soiling to the cloth covered boards. Half brown leather with designs in blind, decorative gilt rules, and gilt lettering, and gray cloth covered boards. Very Good. Very Good binding.
