This book is a manuscript created in the 14th century that contains an allegorical poem by Bartolomeo di Bartoli da Bologna, written as a hymn to the virtues and sciences. This is one of the most beautiful of its kind and reflects the refined taste of the humanist courts of northern Italy. The text is illustrated with twenty full-page miniatures by Niccolà di Giacomo da Bologna and his assistants, a leading illuminator of that period, which offer a unique overview of the iconography of the moral virtues and liberal arts in the later Middle Ages. The Canzone is divided into two cantiche, each consisting of nine stanzas of twenty-one verses, plus a final envoi. The first is dedicated to the seven virtues: Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance, Justice, Faith, Hope, and Charity. The second describes the seven liberal arts of the medieval curriculum: Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric, Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, and Astronomy. In the introductory pages, the author invokes St. Augustine, the great father of the Church, whose writings provided him with the rubrics that precede each stanza. The manuscript, preserved in the Musà e Condà in Chantilly, France, is a masterpiece of Gothic art and literature.
