Francesco Bartolozzi Ra (1727 - 1815) Was An Italian Engraver, Whose Most Productive Period Was Spent In London. Bartolozzi Was Born In Florence. He Was Originally Destined To Follow The Profession Of His Father, A Gold- And Silver-Smith, But He Manifested So Much Skill And Taste In Designing That He Was Placed Under The Supervision Of Two Florentine Artists, Including Ignazio Hugford And Giovanni Domenico Ferretti Who Instructed Him In Painting. After Devoting Three Years To That Art, He Went To Venice And Studied Engraving. He Particularly Admired The Work Of Joseph Wagner. His First Productions In Venice Were Plates In The Style Of Marco Ricci, Zuccarelli, And Others, While Working For Wagner, Which Began To Draw Attention. He Then Moved For A Short Time To Rome, Where He Completed A Set Of Engravings Representing Frescoes At Grottaferrata By Domenichino Depicting The Life Of St Nilus. He Soon Returned To Venice And Left For London In 1764. He Lived In London For Nearly Forty Years. He Produced An Enormous Number Of Engravings, Including Clytie After Annibale Carracci, And Of The Virgin And Child, After Carlo Dolci. A Large Proportion Of Them Are From The Works Of Cipriani And Angelica Kauffman. Bartolozzi Also Contributed A Number Of Plates To Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. He Also Drew Sketches Of His Own In Red Chalk. Soon After Arriving In London, He Was Appointed 'Engraver To The King' With An Annual Salary Of £300. He Was Elected A Founding Member Of The Royal Academy In 1768, And In 1802 Became The Founding President Of The Short-Lived Society Of Engravers. His Pupils Were Michele Benedetti, Ignatius Joseph Van Den Berghe, Thomas Cheesman, Lambertus Antonius Claessens, Daniel Gardner, Christiaan Josi, Johan Fredrik Martin, Conrad Martin Metz, Luigi Schiavonetti, John Keyse Sherwin, Heinrich Sintzenich, Peltro William Tomkins, Don Bernardo Zilotti,[2] And Gabriel Scorodomoff. Bartolozzi Was Not The Inventor Of The So-Called Crayon Manner Of Engraving, Which Imitated The Subtleties Of Chalk Drawings, But He Made It The Fashion. In 1802, Bartolozzi Accepted The Post Of Director Of The National Academy Of Lisbon, The City Where He Died. His Son Gaetano Stefano Bartolozzi, Born In 1757, Was Also An Engraver, And The Father Of Madame Vestris. (Source: Wikipedia).

Ephemera. Condition: Very good condition. First printing. Large sepia stipple engraving depicting an important event in the Hundred Years War between England and France. King John of France, captured during the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 and held for an enormous ransom, is presented with his son to the English King. Engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) an Italian engraver who perfected a technique of stipple engraving "in the crayon manner" which enabled him to interpret the chalk drawings of Renaissance and Baroque masters as engravings. Bartolozzi's engravings of Guercino drawings which he made in Venice convinced Richard Dalton, the librarian to George III, to invite him to come to Britain as engraver to the King. Bartolozzi remained in England for decades, becoming a founding members of the Royal Academy. He made engravings after the masters, as well as contemporary artists such as Reynolds, Gainsborough and Copley; he also made engravings after paintings for Boydell's 'Shakespeare Gallery'. The engraving after a painting by John Francis Rigaud (1742 - 1810), an Italian born painter of historical and decorative works as well as portraits, who moved to London in 1772, becoming a member of the Royal Academy in 1784. Engraving 15 1/2 x 13", on paper 21 x 16". Bright clean impression with crisp plate mark. A scarce print, at Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, Accession No. B1977.14.19784.

Bartolozzi from the original Drawings of Guercino in the Collection of His Majesty" printed in London by the publisher Boydell around 1765 (Davoli 1995, p. 390). At least three editions of this highly prized edition are known: a first undated edition is printed on paper laid with sepia ink around 1765/66, a second undated edition is also printed with sepia ink but on unlaid paper datable to the very early nineteenth century and a third edition, dated 1835 is printed on paper not laid with black ink. This first volume consists of eighty-two prints all taken from drawings by Guercino: fifty-eight of these are by Bartolozzi (fifty-three have the signature, the others are attributed to him), six engravings are by Richard Dalton, George III's librarian, thirteen by James Basire and five by Giovanni Vitalba. Guercino's drawings relating to the edition, now partly considered to be of the school or later copies, are preserved in Windsor Castle where they had been since the eighteenth century (Mahon - Turner 1989).The prints of Guercino's drawings were engraved by Bartolozzi on behalf of Richard Dalton, librarian of the Crown, who also procured the engraver a two-year contract and the title of "King's Engraver". For an in-depth treatment of the subject, please refer to the catalogue of the exhibition "Francesco Bartolozzi engraver of the Graces" edited by Barbara Jatta (1995, pp. 109 - 120), who has shown that collectors were confused with the first Italian edition edited by Piranesi (1764) consisting of a single volume and this first London edition by Boydell, consisting of two volumes. Of this English edition, the Pinacoteca owns 15 sheets by Bartolozzi.
