Paperback. Condition: Good. Alison Bass learned as a child to challenge the status quo. As an adult, she not only challenged, but smashed it as a scrappy outlier, establishing herself as a respected, award-winning investigative journalist in a male-dominated industry. Bass grew up in Bryn Gweled, Pennsylvania, an unusual cooperative community founded by Quakers, where she gained a unique view of the world that compelled her to question everything but also be empathetic and open-minded about the answers she uncovered. The perfect combination for an investigative journalist. In 1989, Bass was the first reporter in the nation to write about how common it was for male psychiatrists to sexually abuse female patients. She was also the first reporter at The Boston Globe to write about the molestation of children by Catholic priests-a decade ahead of the Spotlight investigation chronicled in the 2016 movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Despite her success, Bass alienated her bosses with her assertive reporting style and refusal to take no for an answer. Editors at The Miami Herald in the early 1980s didn't know what to do with a brassy northern broad. At The Boston Globe, she was denied a berth on the Spotlight team because she was considered too independent-minded for a woman. Alison Bass' story is much more than how a sassy outsider became an investigative journalist despite the odds against her. Her perseverance in chipping away at the wall of male bias in how female victims are treated in the media helped pave the way to the #MeToo movement. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. Three years ago, Becca Hudson threw a dart at a map, hit Leesburg, Virginia, and decided it was the perfect place to start over. Now she has her own bakery, The Strawberry Cake Shop, loyal customers, and close friends. She also has something that success as a Hollywood child star couldn't give her: a mostly normal existence. Not that it's without complications. One best friend, Pam, is in the wary early days of a new relationship; another is fighting to save her marriage in the midst of infidelity. And then there's Becca's growing attraction to Matthew, surrogate stepdad to Olivia, a smart, sensitive ten-year-old who's become a fixture in the bakery and in Becca's affections. Still, Becca is content to live in the present and ignore the Whatever happened to? speculation and occasional curious fan--until her past barges in again. Amid revelations and unexpected dilemmas, Becca must confront the life she stepped away from and the love she struggles to accept. It's the only way she'll truly find what she needs: a recipe for living that's honest, messy, sweet, and true. In an eloquent novel as moving as it is funny, acclaimed author Elizabeth Bass tells a story of forgiveness, resilience--and the unexpected detours that shape every journey to happiness. Praise for Elizabeth Bass's Miss You Most of All An exuberant celebration of life, love, family and friendship, told with a sassy Texas flair. --Susan Wiggs.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Seventeen-year-old Erich is a prisoner of war working at a northern Alberta logging camp. Twelve-year-old Max goes to school--reluctantly--in the nearby town. The two would be unlikely friends, except that neither has anyone else to turn to. At the height of World War I, nobody wants to befriend a German. It doesn't matter that Erich was forced into the military by his father, or that Max was proudly born in Canada. They are both easy targets for the locals' grief and anger against the Nazis. The other prisoners are no more welcoming, distrustful of Erich's perfect English and his dislike for Nazism. Still, when a series of accidents shake the logging camp, they pressure Erich to question the Canadians and find the saboteur--even if his questions get him into trouble. Caught between angry prisoners and suspicious captors, Erich is afraid to take any action at all. It is only when Max's schoolyard tormentors cross a dangerous line that Erich realizes that his real loyalties lie not with a regime or a country, but with his friend. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. You should know right now that your life can finally get better. Whatever you've been struggling with, for however long, can actually get better. Almost immediately. For real. I didn't know anything about Not Eating a few years ago but I was a dang expert in intransigent problems. I knew all about soul killing, life sucking problems that just wouldn't get better, but could always get worse. You may have run into some of these problems yourself, who knows. Marriage problems, money problems, friend problems, kid problems, food problems, health problems, drinking problems. I had them all doubled over, shaken up, and coughed out. Then through a series of events that I'll elaborate on a little later, I will just say God made it pretty dang clear to me that I was supposed to Not Eat and I was supposed to ask my wife Susan to Not Eat with me. So I did that. And she said yes. We were going to Not Eat for three days and then I would ask God to save us. Something happened during those three days and we realized we weren't ready to stop. So we kept Not Eating for 21 days. No food. No juice. No supplements. Just prayer. That right then was the beginning of the second half, the better half, of my life here on earth. Over the next year, Susan and I didn't eat for a total of about 100 days. And God saved us and totally transformed our family. I realize from telling the story enough now, that if you don't know me or even if you do, you might think I am making this up. For the record, I am not making this up. It is true. But please please please do yourself a favor, and don't miss out on how your life can be transformed for the better based on whether you believe me or not. About this whole Not Eating thing, I know what you're thinking right off the bat because I think it too every time I do this. Here it is: Not Eating? Not gonna do it. No food? No way. I can't do it. It's going to suck. What about lunch? What about dinner? What about breakfast? And shoot, I'm kind of hungry right now. And then you go eat. Every person who ever Not Ate thought the same thing before they did it too. Here's some people who did Not Eat even though they wanted to eat: Moses, Jesus Christ, King David, Elijah, St. Paul, Gandhi, Cesar Chavez. And me, Greg Bass. One of these things is not like the other. So funny. But seriously, my name is in there too, even though I am ridiculous. If you knew me, you'd know it's not because I'm in the same league as great people from history. My name is in there because Anybody can Not Eat and get a miracle, even if that person is a big screwup. Like me. Or, perhaps, like you. So if you or somebody you know needs help, big help, and nothing else seems to be helping, maybe you should try: Not Eating.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Winner of the RNA Book Award, Nautilus Award, and Wilbur Award. This special paperback edition includes a 40-day devotional that pairs passages from Grounded with prayers and reflections, ideal for use during the Lenten season or any season of reflection. The headlines are clear: religion is on the decline in America as many people leave behind traditional religious practices. Diana Butler Bass, leading commentator on religion, politics, and culture, follows up her acclaimed book Christianity After Religion by arguing that what appears to be a decline actually signals a major transformation in how people understand and experience God. The distant God of conventional religion has given way to a more intimate sense of the sacred that is with us in the world. This shift, from a vertical understanding of God to a God found on the horizons of nature and human community, is at the heart of a spiritual revolution that surrounds us -- and that is challenging not only religious institutions but political and social ones as well. Grounded explores this cultural turn as Bass unpacks how people are finding new spiritual ground by discovering and embracing God everywhere in the world around us--in the soil, the water, the sky, in our homes and neighborhoods, and in the global commons. Faith is no longer a matter of mountaintop experience or institutional practice; instead, people are connecting with God through the environment in which we live. Grounded guides readers through our contemporary spiritual habitat as it points out and pays attention to the ways in which people experience a God who animates creation and community. Bass brings her understanding of the latest research and studies and her deep knowledge of history and theology to Grounded. She cites news, trends, data, and pop culture, weaves in spiritual texts and ancient traditions, and pulls it all together through stories of her own and others' spiritual journeys. Grounded observes and reports a radical change in the way many people understand God and how they practice faith. In doing so, Bass invites readers to join this emerging spiritual revolution, find a revitalized expression of faith, and change the world.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The conventional wisdom about mainline Protestantism maintains that it is a dying tradition, irrelevant to a postmodern society, unresponsive to change, and increasingly disconnected from its core faith tenets. In her provocative new book, historian and researcher Diana Butler Bass argues that there are signs that mainline Protestant churches are indeed changing, finding a new vitality intentionally grounded in Christian practices and laying the groundwork for a new type of congregation. The Practicing Congregation tracks these changes by looking at the overall history of American congregations, noting the cultural trends that have sparked change, and providing evidence of how mainline churches are reappropriating traditional Christian practices. The signs of life that Bass identifies lead the reader beyond the crumbling liberal vs. conservative dualities to a more nuanced and fluid understanding of the shape of contemporary ecclesiology and faithfulness. In so doing, she helps readers understand tradition in new ways and creates an alternative path through the culture wars that today arrest the energies of most denominations. Invigorated by stories from Bass's own experience, The Practicing Congregation provides a hopeful and exciting vision for the church. The imaginative retraditioning she identifies and celebrates will guide pastors and other leaders on this pilgrimage of creating church and convincingly counter the naysayers that long ago gave up on the viability of the mainline church.…
