La Haye, Frédéric Staatman, 1764. In-12, demi-vélin à la bradel à petits coins, titre doré, (2) f., (1) f. comportant la petite étiquette imprimée de titre d'origine à découper, xij, 271 p., vignette de titre gravée. Edition originale. (C.E. Vaughan, 'The political writings of J.-J. Rousseau', Cambridge U.P., 1911. II, p. 11-12).

Add to basketFirst edition of this early rejection of Rousseau's Social Contract, offering possibly the most sustained contemporary response to and analysis of the text. "Perhaps the most thorough engagement was that of Paul-Louis de Bauclair (1735-1804), advisor to the landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt and author of a sympathetic biography of Peter the Great, whose Anti-Contract social, published in 1764, refutes Rousseau's treatise section by section, and nearly line by line. On certain points Bauclair found himself in accord with his adversary, especially regarding the dangers of excessive luxury and the role of alienation in the founding of political associations. Yet his alternative account of the general will departs significantly from that of Rousseau. Bauclair refused to accept the notion that sovereignty can reside in an abstract moi commun, rather than in a particular institution (in the case of a republic) or person (in a monarchy). Like Rousseau's clerical critics, he feared that granting the body politic so total an authority over its members denies the essential nature of the human person as a distinct moral and spiritual entity - in a word, as an individual" (Coleman, p. 240). In this, Bauclair can be seen as a forerunner of later critics who placed Rousseau's treatise as a premonition of totalitarianism. Conlon, Ouvrages français relatifs à Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 277. Charly Coleman, The Virtues of Abandon An Anti-Individualist History of the French Enlightenment, 2014. Duodecimo (150 x 94 mm). Bound at the front is a leaf with a small printed title, apparently intended for excision and use as a spine label. Contemporary sheep, brown label, gilt triple-rule to covers. Joints and extremities restored, contents pulled between gatherings H and I, spine a little creased, light spotting; a good copy.
