The Spectator (1711-1712; 1714) gilt gemeinhin als Prototyp für die Gattung der Moralischen Wochenschriften und stand von Beginn an eng mit dem Diskurssystem der protestantischen Ethik in Verbindung. Schon die ersten Exemplare der englischsprachig…en Zeitung thematisierten zeitgenà ssische Fragen des britischen Liberalisimus in allegorischer Form. Die beiden Journalisten und Schriftsteller Richard Steele and Joseph Addison brachten ihr eigenes Publikationsprojekt als Beispiel für ein à konomisches Unternehmen ein und lenkten den Blick - gewissermaÃen selbstreferentiell - auf die finanziellen und materiellen Implikationen ihres Vorhabens und die damit verbundenen Risiken und Gefahren. Auf diese Weise gelangten auch die Verkaufsstrategien der Wochenschriften in ihren eigenen Beiträgen exemplarisch zur Beobachtung und trugen maÃgeblich zur Vermittlung à konomischer Logik bei. Mit dem Export des Spectator-Modells auf den europäischen Kontinent wurden beide wirtschaftlichen Argumentationslinien miteinander verknüpft. Die Nachfolger von Steele und Addison konzentrierten sich oft auf die Probleme ihrer kulturellen Umgebung: Man fragte sich, ob Geld eine in sozialer Hinsicht zusammenführende oder trennende Funktion habe, wie es mit der Bedeutung von Handel und Austausch von Gütern und Informationen stünde oder in welcher Beziehung der Reichtum einer Nation mit dem Fleià seiner Einwohner stünde. Und zugleich entwickelte man durch die Einbindung von Fragen zum eigenen Publikationsunternehmen eine Art evidenzbildenden Metadiskurs. Die hier versammelten Beiträge zeigen formale und thematische Aspekte dieser wirtschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung in den Moralischen Wochenschriften auf, wobei nicht zuletzt auch die Verbreitung der Thesen auf internationaler Ebene im 18. Jahrhundert zum Ausdruck kommen soll. Allerdings soll nicht nur der englische Prototyp als einziger Ideenspender herangezogen werden, da auch die lokalen Traditionen bei der Entwicklung dieses Diskursfeldes eine wichtige Rolle spielten.
