First edition of the most beloved of all American fairy tales, a rare presentation copy inscribed by the illustrator W. W. Denslow. Quarto, original full pictorial cloth stamped in green and red, illustrated by Denslow throughout and with twenty-four full-page color plates including the pictorial title. First edition, in the first state of the text, a mixed state of the plates, and the second state of the binding. Presentation copy, inscribed by the illustrator on the front free endpaper with his distinctive seahorse monogram, âTo Mrs. Frank Pixley, with sincere regards of W. W. Denslow, July 16th 1901.â The recipient is very likely Isabel Pixley, wife of the playwright Frank S. Pixley, who edited the Chicago Times-Herald from 1899 to 1902, a paper for which Denslow worked as an illustrator and in which Baum published his early writing, placing this copy squarely within the Chicago circle from which Oz emerged. The first state of the text shows the misprints âlow wailâ on page 14, âpeicesâ on page 81, and âWhile Tin Woodmanâ on page 271, together with the eleven-line colophon, and the binding is the second state, with the publisherâs imprint at the foot of the spine printed in red sans-serif type. In good condition with the first plate loose and chipped, a few closed marginal tears, and the original cloth faintly toned. Hanff and Greene I.1 (binding variant B). An exceptional association copy of the book that created an American mythology. Presentation copies inscribed by Denslow are of the greatest rarity, with only four others to appearing at auction in the 126 years since publication. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900, was the first great American fairy tale, L. Frank Baum?s story of the Kansas farm girl Dorothy, carried by a cyclone to the marvelous Land of Oz, where she and her companions the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion journey to the Emerald City in search of the humbug Wizard. W. W. Denslow?s lavish color illustrations, printed throughout the text and integral to the book?s design, made it one of the most beautiful children?s books ever produced in America and did much to secure its immediate success. Baum and Denslow had both depicted the 1893 World?s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the fabled White City, for the Chicago Times-Herald, and many scholars trace the inspiration for the Emerald City to that dazzling imaginary metropolis. Baum himself wrote of the fair that ?the illumination in the evening was beautiful, and the sky was aglow with the gorgeous electrical designs displayed from the aerial island suspended over the exposition grounds? (Chicago Times-Herald, 19 January 1896). Denslow?s designs went on to shape the sets and costumes of the stage adaptations and of the beloved 1939 film, and they continue to define the popular image of Oz to this day.…
