Aus dem jungen Mann, der seine Tagebücher illustrierte, wurde ein ernsthafter Künstler, der sich in der internationalen Szene eine zentrale Position eroberte. Er kollaborie…rte mit Francis Bacon und Salvador Dalí, gestaltete Tagebücher mit Andy Warhol und ging mit Truman Capote, Terry Southern und den Rolling Stones auf Tour - sie alle werden in seinem Werk auf die ein oder andere Weise zum Leben erweckt. Als Modefotograf nahm er Vogue-Stars wie Veruschka mit nach Afrika und brachte andere in die Vereinigten Staaten. In den frühen 1960er Jahren fuhr Beard nach Kenia und lernte dort die Autorin Isak Dinesen (Tania Blixen) kennen und schätzen. Er erwarb ein Stück Land neben dem ihrem unter der Bedingung, dass er dessen Flora und Fauna dokumentiert. Beard erlebte die Bevölkerungsexplosion in Kenia mit, das Ende der Ressourcen und die Bedrohung vieler Tierarten (darunter die Elefanten von Tsavo, die zu zehntausenden inmitten einer ausgelaugten Landschaft starben) und hielt diese Erfahrungen in seinen Tagebüchern, Fotografien und Collagen fest. Mit seinen einzigartigen, manchmal schockierenden Werken wie The End of the Game (Die letzte Jagd) arbeitete er gegen den Zeitgeist: er zeigte die verendeten Körper, wie sie waren, und beschrieb seine Eindrücke sorgfältig auf der Schreibmaschine sowie mit der Hand. Seine Fotografien benutzte Beard dabei als Leinwand - Kontaktabzüge, Zeitungsschnipsel, Postkarten und andere gesammelte Objekte ordnete er neben- und übereinander an und schmückte sie mit seiner akkuraten Handschrift, Zeichnungen und Tierblut aus. 2006 veröffentlichte TASCHEN die limitierte Ausgabe dieses Buchs, das Beards uvre in all seinen Facetten widerspiegelt. Die vom Künstler signierte zweibändige Collector's Edition war sofort vergriffen und ist heute ein begehrtes Sammlerstück. In den folgenden zehn Jahren wurde die Monografie in zwei kleineren Versionen wiederaufgelegt - aber manchmal ist größer eben doch besser: Für alle, die damals leer ausgingen, ist nun diese großformatige einbändige Ausgabe erhältlich.
