Mais ce roman gigantesque affirme aussi une conquête de soi et analyse le drame de l?unité perdue: l?individu, privé de son support naturel qu?est la famille, forme sociale du couple, est plus éloigné que jamais de l?unité désespérément recherchée et s?insurge contre la société et contre lui-même. Cet ensemble compose une vaste fresque qui n?est pas sans compléter celle que Proust nous a léguée de l?aristocratie et de la haute bourgeoisie de la même époque. René Béhaine, de son vrai nom René Gaston Béhenne, né le 17 juin 1880 à Vervins (Aisne) et mort le 2 janvier 1966 à Villefranche-sur-Mer, est un écrivain français. Toute sa vie, il sera un individualiste forcené, refusant, par exemple, le service militaire et passant la Première Guerre mondiale en Suisse.

A previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some moderate marking and tanning. Gilt lettering to spine is slightly dulled. Unclipped jacket has light edge wear with minor tears, chipping and creasing. Some tanning and foxing to all surfaces, particularly to spine.

Offset from binding along free endpapers otherwise very good to near fine in somewhat soiled but still quite good dust jacket with mostly tiny nicks and tears and one narrow chip at top rear spine fold. Quite scarce in the British edition.
