Blattgröße 27,6 x 37 cm (stärker fleckig)--- - Hans Sebald Beham (* 1500 in Nürnberg, gest. 22. November 1550 in Frankfurt am Main) war ein bedeutender Maler und Kupferstecher - 750 Gramm.
Condition: molto buono. Esemplare ben inchiostrato con piccolo restauro all'angolo (bianco) inferiore destro. This superb original woodcut is entitled ''The Last Supper'', from Passion. Sebald Beham (1500-1550) was a German painter and printmaker, especially noted for his engravings. Born in Nuremberg, he spent the later part of his career in Frankfurt. He was one of the most important of the ''Little Masters'', the group of German artists making prints in the generation after Dürer. His early work was done under the shadow of Dürer, who was still working in Nuremberg, and one early woodcut ''Head of Christ'', to which the ''AD'' monogram was added in the second state (though probably not by Beham), was long misattributed to Dürer by Adam Bartsch and others. He also borrowed from his brother Barthel's rather more original works. In his later work he boldly re-interpreted many of Dürer's most famous prints in works such as his Melancholia of 1539, exploiting the difference in scale between his work and the original. His name is often given as Hans Sebald Beham, although there is no documentary evidence that he ever used this additional forename Hollstein, German, III, 180. Thieme-Becker, Künstler-Lexikon, III, Lipsia 1909 . Book.

Condition: Very good. - sc - A superb reproduction of Hans Sebald Beham's 1542 engraving "The Little Buffoon" on 4-1/4 inch high by 6 inch wide watermarked paper. The 1-7/8 inch high by 3-1/8 inch wide measurements of the engraving matches that of the original as do all other details. The image protrays a "fool" with donkey ears and bells on his helmet, carrying a noisemaker, his stool in a pile beneath him. The buffoon has, in two places, broken through the banderoles upon which is written the crude verse "On dir hab ich gerisen das ich mich hab beschisen" [I have written on you that I have beshit myself]. There are stains at the top corners from the remnant of glue from the mounting tape which once adhered to the verso. Else, a near fine strong engraving. Born in Nuremberg Hans Sebald Beham (1500-1550) was one of the Northern Renaissance Little Masters, so called because of their eminence in producing small scale engravings such as "Ornament with Two Genii Riding on Two Chimeras". Although, as with his brother Barthel it can't be determined with any certainty, some believe he may have trained under Durer and produced his first engraving in 1518.

Many of their iron plates were reprinted at least twice: 230 plates were reissued, with numbers added, in the seventeenth century by David Funck (1642-1709) at Nuremberg, part of 'Oparae Hopferianae' and in 1802 ninety-two plates were published by C.Wilhelm Silberburg at Frankfurt (British Museum, inv. nos. 1940,0810.20(1/92)), part of 'Opera Hopferiana'. The existence of certain numbered impressions on good sixteenth-century paper has also been noted (see T. Falk in Hollstein, p. 5). Worked as an armourer in Augsburg. He was the earliest artist to adapt the practice of etching on iron to printmaking and to make a significant profession out of it. He produced 145 etchings and his sons, Hieronymus (c.1500-63) and Lambert (active c. 1525-50), continued the family reputation as etchers for a generation in Augsburg and Nuremberg. Daniel also designed a few woodcuts, chiefly ornamental borders for book illustrations (Hollstein, 146-155). In 1524 the Emperor Charles V conferred on Hopfer a coat of arms for his "true accomplishments in the service of the Emperor and Empire" (Eyssen, p. 37). He was an active supporter of the Reformation. Source: British Museum. Condition: very good, given age. Some remains of paper tape on rear from attachment. Litht creasing. A note on the provenance: D.G. de Arozarena was a collector of South American origin; he arrived in France in 1859 and after two years had built an important collection of prints and drawings. He sold it in 1861 on his return to South America.
