Inside pages clean and unmarked. Mr. Heine is a dachshund. His coat is shiny black, his front feet turn daintily out, and he knows that he is really handsome. There is a warm bed for him under the kitchen stove, and he has a safe place to hide bones. Mr. Heinie wags his tail at friends and barks fiercely at strangers. He is a well-bred and respectable dog. Everyone always calls him Mister Heinie. Scroot is just Scroot, and no one ever does know what kind of dog he is. His ears don't match and his coat is raggedy. At night he curls up wherever he happens to be, and he is lucky if he has had any dinner at all. He is a very unhappy puppy with no one to love alnd no place to go. One cold, winter night Scroot comes to Mr. Heinie's house. And this is the story of what happens. Aldarilla S. Beistle (illustrator).
