Plans and elevations included town houses, country houses, a courthouse, and a meetinghouse similar to Benjamin's Old West" (ANB). Plate 39 is a preliminary elevation and plan of Boston's Old West Church, one of Benjamin's finest works, here copied from his original design for the building.Benjamin's books translated complex design and construction concepts into usable plans for New England's carpenter-builders, often serving as their only source of education in the field. His "special genius lay in the ability to present plans, elevations, and details in a manner understandable to country carpenters and urban builders alike. Add to basketFull calf. Condition: Very Good. The very important 1811 "corrected and enlarged" 2nd edition of this early, seminal guidebook in American architecture. Authored by Asher Benjamin (1773-1845), considered one of the country's first great writers on architecture. Contains more plates (59) than the 1st edition (44), which was publi…shed 5 years earlier in 1806. The 59 copperplate engravings have here been carefully collated (for completeness and condition) and, as with the 1st edition, were executed by Daniel Raynerd. We note that in his 2 pg. Preface to this 1811 2nd edition, Benjamin states "Sixteen plates, whch were in the first edition, I have laid aside, and have added twenty nine new ones; which almost make this a new work". This copy remains solid and well-preserved, and presents very well. Bound in the publisher's original --or at the very least a contemporary-to-the-period-- full mottled calf. Red leather title label in gilt (very likely later) at the spine. Light, forgivable foxing throughout the text, mild offsetting at the endsheets and pastedowns. Wonderful handwritten notes ("Diameter of Columns to the Height") adorn the frontispiece and the front pastedown, and clearly suggest the 19th century scribbles of a hard-at-work carpenter/architect. Quarto, 102 pgs. all told. A nice piece of architectural Americana. Daniel Raynerd (illustrator).

The 1816 edition is largely as revised and expanded for the second edition (1811), with some few additional revisions to the text and one plate; sixteen plates from the first edition were removed and 29 new plates added, and the quality of the remaining plates was improved. This copy with the 1820 ownership inscription of Jared Coffin (1790-1874) of Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard. In 1828 Coffin built the Timothy Coffin, Jr, House at 30 South Water Street in Edgartown. Coffin was married to Sarah Baylies, whose brother Frederick Baylies, Jr. (1797-1884), was responsible for much of Edgartown's civic architecture, including the Old Whaling Church, designed in 1842. The book evidently was passed down by descent in the Coffin family; a later inscription from 1934 presents the book from Arthur B. Coffin to George W. Coffin, "on acct of his interest and work in designing the little Cottage on the Hill at Green Harbor, Edgartown Mass."PROVENANCE: Jared Coffin, 1820 (ownership inscription on ffep); George W.
