Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American edition. Printed in Great Britain. Preface, Detailed Contents (with dates of all the letters), Biographical background, Notes, Plates: Frontispiece and three other Portraits, Correspondence, Index; xvi, 607 pages. The original dark green cloth is in very good shape with gilt lettering still bright on the gently bumped spine; there is a touch of rubbing to the corner tips. The interior remains crisp, clean, and bright, despite a mere hint of toning to the endpapers. This is a very nice copy. Stamped on the copyright page: "Gift of Wendell T. Bush," though there is no indication to whom it was given. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] Bush was an author, philosophy professor, and co-editor with Woodbridge of 'The Journal of Philosophy.' "This volume contains the hitherto unpublished correspondence between the philosopher Locke and the parliamentarian Edward Clarke. . . . [T]he letters written by Locke number over two hundred. . . . The eighty-seven letters of Clarke to Locke are also now printed for the first time." Also included are several written by Mary Jepp Clarke, their daughter Elizabeth, and John Cary. The lives of Locke and Clarke are presented in the form of a biographical narrative (in the first seventy-three pages) that sets forth the history of the close relations between the men. It throws additional light on the growth of Locke's "Essay concerning Human Understanding" and includes the original draft of a large part of "Some Thoughts concerning Education." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
