About the book >.>.> This project began in 1980 with a modest investigation, carried out by the writers, of surviving mileposts and milestones in…the Taunton area. Al though undertaken during the summer, the worst possible season for roadside vegetation, results were sufficiently encouraging for us to develop what vas, in effect, a feasibility study in the following year. Members of Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society surveyed routes of the former Taunton Turnpike Trust, and their work revealed a wide variety of wayside features as well as posing questions relating to the history and management of the roads themselves. In subsequent years, the authors have refined early recording techniques, and by combining fieldwork with historical research, have produced the present monograph. As far as is known, information in this format about roads is unique both locally and nationally, but it is inevitable that any innovative approach must have its shortcomings, especially as it involves the study of over 130 separate lengths o.
