About the book >.>.> This project began in 1980 with a modest investigation, carried out by the writers, of surviving mileposts and milestones in the Taunton area. Al though undertaken during the summer, the worst possible season for roadside vegetation, results were sufficiently encouraging for us to develop what vas, in effect, a feasibility study in the following year. Members of Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society surveyed routes of the former Taunton Turnpike Trust, and their work revealed a wide variety of wayside features as well as posing questions relating to the history and management of the roads themselves. In subsequent years, the authors have refined early recording techniques, and by combining fieldwork with historical research, have produced the present monograph. Published by the Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society (SIAS), this comprehensive study documents the historic 17th- to 19th-century Turnpike Trusts and their surviving wayside features across the county. First Volume (Phase 1): Covers Western Somerset (originally published in 1985). The cover features an illustration of a classic stone milestone indicating distances to London (127 miles), Bristol, Bath, Wells, Taunton, and Yeovil. Second Volume (Phase 2): Covers Eastern Somerset (originally published in 1987). The cover replicates an original historical notice for the Vale of Blackmoor Horsington Turnpike Gate from July 19, 1824, complete with a detailed table of tolls for horses, coaches, wagons, and cattle. These monographs are considered exceptionally scarce, as they were published in very limited editions (such as a run of just 90 copies for certain versions) and feature detailed ring-bound pages alongside fold-out maps and historical fieldwork surveys.
