Fine, fresh, unread copy. Color illustrated softcovers. 128 pp. with index. 298 rare, unpublished, primary source photographs and a fascinating text tell the compelling story of how and why modern ocean lifeguards emerged on the New Jersey Shore. The earliest visitors to the New Jersey shore would have seen and walked on pristine, deserted beaches. By the mid-19th century, the Jersey Shore, from Sandy Hook to Cape May, became an increasingly popular tourist destination and larger and more elaborate Victorian era hotels were erected along beachfront property. To protect tourists, the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, originally made up of volunteers beginning around 1872, was made a City department in 1891(it's recognized as the oldest in the United States); other lifesaving groups sprang up along the Jersey Shore in the last decade of the 19th century and first decade of the 20th (Ocean City in 1898 for example, and Avalon in 1905). The boats and other equipment evolved over the decades as well. Jeanne Bonk Baldino was the first female lifeguard (1944 in Belmar).

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition oversized photographic softcover wraps. Includes Inner Front Cover Blurb About the Book; Author Dedication; Foreword by James M. McPherson; Introduction; Acknowledgments; Selected Bibliography; Index and About the Author. Signed and inscribed by the author in black pen at the upper margin of the full title page. The upper right cover tip has a very light 1/4 inch crease and upper left cover corner has a one inch crease (see photographs); the volume is otherwise in as new condition. "It was a time of unbridled patriotism, unabashed chivalry and fierce courage, amidst a war so devastating that the very foundation of our country trembled. This is the story of six men in one regiment that faced the single greatest horror this nation has ever known - the Civil War. It is a study of courage in the face of near certain death; of honor before God and Flag; of a longing to return home where loved ones spent much of their time worrying about the fate of the volunteers who chose to fight. Upon the Tented Field is a work with more than 300 letters, written by these six men over a three year period, between July 1862 and June 1865. A photographic history accompanies the correspondence, creating a truly unique historical perspective. In the Foreword, noted historian and Pulitzer Prize winning author James M. McPherson writes, "Of all such collections I have read, Upon The Tented Field is one of the best. It includes the letters of not just one soldier, but six, whose descriptions of their experiences together provide a gripping narrative of the 145th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. The real war - the tragedy of suffering and loss - does get into this book." It is that narrative that will capture the imagination. The descriptive power of these letters is impressive. The reader will experience the many privations of camp and life in the field, and will sense the adrenaline rise each time the regiment prepares to meet the enemy. Americans remain fascinated with the CIvil War - a war in which brother fought brother, father opposed son, and mothers were left to pick up the pieces of so many shattered dreams. Since the written word was the only real means of communication, it is in their eloquent words that we search for an understanding of that time, not so long ago." - excerpt from the inner front cover and inner rear cover.
