Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. Edwin Whitefield (1816-1892) was born in England and emigrated to the United States in 1838. His passion was documenting the true American landscape of the time, and he became a traveling artist who visited many cities and the countryside, including Brooklyn, Toronto, Quebec City, Montreal, and Boston. He began with watercolors and sketches, but then learned lithography and converted many of his works into prints. He is best known for his lithography. He was also a noted illustrator of native American flora, and his illustrations were included in the 1848-1850 volumes by Asa B. Strong, titled The American Flora, and in the 1845 volume by Emma C Embury, American Wildflowers in Their Native Haunts. This publication provides a biographical background of Whitefield that is based on a set of diaries and other papers of Whitefield's that were donated by his granddaughter to the Boston Public Library, as well as articles from Minnesota History, where Whitefield eventually settled. Includes 62 pages of reproductions of Whitefield's lithographs, paintings, and sketches, several in color. LIMITED EDITION. #89 of 500 copies. Signed by author. In blue cloth covered boards with gilt title to spine. Spine faded to tan. In slipcase with colored landscape to front. Interior is bright and clean. 158 pp. Art. ART/4173. Signed.
