On lit dans la postface de la traduction en russe: "L' uvre d'Olympe Bhêly-Quenum suscite beaucoup de sympathie pour cette Afrique, qui, quoique lointaine, nous est devenue tellement proche grâce à lui". D'éminentes personnalités se sont exprimées sans détour : président du Sénégal, membre de l'Académie française, le grand poète Léopold Sédar Senghor avait écrit à l'auteur :" Votre livre est bon, la pédagogie en est fort appréciable, mon fils Phillipe le lira." Henri Quefflélec, de l'Académie Goncourt, confiait dans une lettre manuscrite sa "très délicate surprise en lisant dans le beau livre Un Enfant d'Afrique, une référence concernant le Journal d'un Salaud". Le directeur général de l'Unesco, Réné Maheu écrivit :"un livre pour les enfants d'Afrique et ceux des autres pays ! [.] quel plaisir aussi de découvrir dans ce beau livre, des enfants de paysans alphabétisant leur père !" La Commission culturelle de l'Organisation de l'Unité africaine a souhaité la traduction de cet ouvrage en plusieurs langues afin qu'il soit accessible à tous les jeunes. Lors de l'hommage rendu au célèbre écrivain nigérian, Chinua Achebe, Olympe Bhêly-Quenum a fait le récit de leurs échanges : "Trois ans avant son décès, il m'a téléphoné pour savoir si Un Enfant d'Afrique était traduit en anglais, puis il précisa qu'il voulait collaborer à un livre pour les jeunes africains et qu'un lecteur l'avait informé que ma description du marché d'Onisha et de ses mystères était remarquable.".

First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (20.5cm.); original white wrappers printed in red and black; [11],12-254pp. Light foxing to spine, else a Near Fine, unopened copy. Beninese author's first novel, which does not express popular anticolonialist tropes in order to demonstrate that it was possible for an African to write a non-political novel. The fate of his protagonist, Ahouna, is told in two parts: "the first part is a report made by a Dahomean scientist name Houanou.of Ahanou's own first-person reminiscences of the happy years of his life as a pastoral poet and musician before he became a murderer in consequence of his wife's irrational jealousy. In the second part, the tribulations of Ahanou are recounted in the third person by Houanou himself as Ahanou is imprisoned by the colonial authorities, escapes with the deceitful help of one of his victims' kinsmen, is captured by the latter and burnt alive in punishment for his deed (Gérard, ed. European-Language Writing in Sub-Saharan Africa, p.532-533).
