Hardcover. xiv p., Greek text on [1], 1-127, 127A, 128-133, [7], 134-239, [2] leaves printed on recto in red and black; 36.5 cm., folio. From the introduction: `I. The common matter of the three Synoptists, being (for the first time in the history of Biblical criticism [with note on H. van Voorst's Dutch work of 1855-56]) made clearly prominent and separable from all context, affords the reader an opportunity of considering its language, style and contents, and of judging how far it may be taken by itself out of its triple framework and yet remain an intelligible picture. Hence the reader has altogether new facilities for discussing the probability or improbability of the supposition that this Triple Tradition is the nearest approximation we possess to some Original Greek Tradition whence our three Synoptic Gospels have been directly or indirectly derived. St. Mark's version, which stands in the left-hand column, apart from other considerations, seemed best fitted by its brevity to be adopted as the standard. It has therefore been printed at full length without deviation from its order; those parts alone of St. Matthew and St. Luke being inserted which are parallel to the narrative of St. Mark. The text is that of the Fourth Edition of Tischendorf's Synopsis Evangelica (Leipzig, 1878), corrected in all the more important variations of reading by the text of Westcott and Hort' [as supplied by Hort prior to publication in 1881] -- Intricate typography required a special font of Greek type, just enough to set each of the 7 parts (6 of text + appendix) from which a pair of stereotype plates was cast. By chiselling out what did not apply, text common to the gospels was printed in red and variant text in black. Worn blue cloth, back loose & patched, cover loose. Sl. marking.

Rare Gospel of St Luke and Acts of the Apostles in the Hindustani (Urdu) language, in the Arabic script, printed by and for the Protestant Bible and missionary societies for free distribution in southern India. While India probably had more than 100,000 Urdu speakers at this date, few could read, so the book was published in an edition of 1500 copies (the edition size, with the year 1849, is printed at the foot of the first page of the main text: it was probably printed toward the end of 1849 for distribution in 1850, the year in the imprint). With a bookplate and an embossed stamp on the title-page and last two text leaves. Very slightly browned, but in very good condition. The binding cloth is cracked at the hinge and the backstrip damaged and secured with tape, but the binding is otherwise good. A rare Urdu missionary Bible text, in Arabic type.l Wesleyan Missionary notices, VIII (London, 1850), p. 199 (this edition?); WorldCat (2 copies). Contemporary dark brown cloth with the publisher's letterpress-printed paper spine label. With the title in Hindustani (Urdu) and English, and the text in Urdu only. The pages procede from right to left like a normal book in Arabic type. Set in 2 sizes of Arabic type with the English title in roman capitals. Pages: [1], [1 blank], 191, [1 blank] pp.

Scarce near fine pictorial dust wrapper, classic cover and spine titles, moderate edge wear, rub; clipped, protected in new clear sleeve. Dust jacket features wrap-around scene of Mother Mary cradling the babe in her arms surrounded by wise men et al. Near fine first edition in same wrapper. Seldom is it possible to present so beautiful and so universally appealing a volume as this Everett Shinn illustrated edition of the world's most beloved story. The text is taken entirely from the King James Version of Matthew and Luke as they tell of the birth of Christ and His Life up to the age of twelve. The story begins with the famous prohecy of Christ's birth from Isaiah. This is the Bible story pictured with marvel and reverence by one of America's foremost and beloved artists. Children, and fathers and mothers too, will remember with delight Everett Shinn's imagery in The Happy Night Before Christmas. Presented here is the same sweep, the same richly subtle color, with a new spriitual quality that makes the paintings breathtakingly ethereal. Everett Shinn was a member of the Ashcan School of Artists and also a prestigious colony of artists in Westport, Connecticut. He was largely known as a 'realist' for his artistic depictions of city street scenes and the drama of the theater. He began as a Philadelphia newspaper illustrator with his vibrant imagery demonstrating a rare iconic movement or motion just before photography became widely utilized. His best effectively captured city life in the first years of the twentieth century, in both a realist and romantic spirit. His most ambitious paintings - The London Hippodrome, The Orchestra Pit: Old Proctor's Fifth Avenue Theater - are among the greatest theatrical works in American art. He also was a model for the protagonist of Theodore Dreiser's novel The "Genius". Printed in the United States of America. Apprx. 33 pages. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
