Billaut député : questions d'affaires (1839 à 1846), questions politiques (1840 à 1848). Tome 2 : M. Billault député, puis ministre de l'Intérieur (1854 à 1860), puis ministre sans portefeuille (1860 à 1863). Bâtonnier du barreau de Nantes, saint-simonien et anticlérical, Adolphe Billault (1805-1863) fut élu dès 1837 dans la Loire-Inférieure. Constamment réélu jusqu'à la chute de la monarchie de Juillet, il prit place à gauche et accepta cependant les fonctions de sous-secrétaire d'État à l'agriculture et au commerce en 1840, avant de regagner l'opposition. Réélu à la Constituante de 1848, il proclama ses opinions républicaines et soutint le parti de Cavaignac. Il se rallia au régime impérial, dont il devint une personnalité politique de premier plan, plusieurs fois député de la Loire-Inférieure, ministre et sénateur.
