In the 'historic' Yatenga region (northern Burkina Faso), as in the Sahel as a whole, the increasing poverty of rural communities is accompanied by an exponential fodder crisis, which is one of the manifestations of desertification. However, agroecological alternatives are available that make the most of local resources: when applied to food crops, market gardening and fruit cultivation, they help ensure food and fodder security. Inexpensive methods of participatory land management have also been developed to optimise water resources and the productive potential of low-lying areas. The challenges to be met are, however, considerable: the creation of reliable and profitable supply chains, the establishment of a local tax system commensurate with the challenges, and the training of local councillors in land management. It will also be necessary to maintain a high level of R&D on key biological themes: bio-nutrients and biopesticides in particular.
