A "writing out in story form" of some of the humorous adventures (adventures "found on our front doorstep and in our back yard") of Billy and Betty, two children who supposedly published an amateur newspaper, adventures which originally appeared on a radio program with the same title as this book. The Whatsit became a four page cartoon insert in 'True Story' magazine and eventually an immensely popular miniature newspaper "by children for children" which reached a subscription level of almost 4 million children. Als inclues cartoons and illustrations by Joe Banks and humorous verse. 333 pp. Good condition in blue cloth with gold panels - some wear to the ends of the spine the corners, a few foxing/spots to the margins, prev owner's name in pencil.

On the inside front page is a drawing of a Chinese junk, and on the inside rear page is printed the poem 'Till We Meet Again'. On the rear cover is a b&w photo of Vice Admiral Milton ('Mary') E. Miles, the late husband of Mrs. Miles. Laid-in loose is a another folded pamphlet entitled 'Celebrate the Life of Billy Miles', published as a commemorative pamphlet to be handed out to mourners attending Mrs. Miles funeral. The two preliminary pages contain the 'Order of Service', followed by a charming six page account of the life of Mrs. Miles, in the middle of which is a folded portfolio of photos of Mrs. Miles from girlhood to age 89. Inside of the last page is the Miles family tree. The outer folder shows some soiling, else everything is in very good condition. Also included is a typed letter from John Gavin addressed to Murray E. Miles, which accompanied a copy of the remarks which Gavin gave at the service for Mrs. Miles.

William Steel (1923-82), was a Scottish professional footballer who played for St Mirren, Morton, Derby County, Dundee and the Scotland national team. One of Scotland's greatest inside forwards, Billy Steel combined a brilliant footballing brain with a busy work ethic and explosive shot. Steel was the subject of two record transfer fees during his career. As well as receiving 30 caps for Scotland, Steel made four appearances with the Scottish League, was a Scottish Cup finalist in 1952, and was a Scottish League Cup winner in 1952 and 1953. He scored a memorable goal for a Great Britain XI against the Rest of Europe in 1947. He was inducted into Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2006. In 1954 he announced he was emigrating to the USA, where he managed the Los Angeles Danes, before later working in advertising. Exceptionally scarce signed. Signed by Author(s).
