Book
Soft cover. Condition: Good ++. Yvonne Slipka (illustrator). First Edition. SUBTITLED : ` A Short History of Canadian People '. These 166 pages offer themselves as ' a short economic and social history of Canada'. Somehow they present a view of Canadian history not typically seen - e.g. there is little mention onf the Montreal-based rich class that `pushed back the frontiers'. Two pieces jumped out at me - both maps. One was the trade (rum and lumber) between Nova Scotia and the Caribbean - circa 1828. The second : the map of the Assiniboia District ( p. 67) as it follows the Red River south of the 49th parallel. LEARN about Massey Harris, Redpath, United Aircraft and Canada Firsters. Yvonne Slipka has done many b/w drawings to accompany the text. There seems often to be a humorous or cheeky undercurrent. There are also several sketch maps - for example to illistrate trade between the Mother Land and the colony. Cond ; Paper wrapper is black and red with black lettering. Front cover drawing shows five individual Canadians - among them Gabriel Dumont. Volume has plenty of wear. Colours bright, binding sound. No marks, names, nor tears. Minimal soiling. Excellent reading copy. Quote (p. 56) : "._._. its interests would be well represented. Combined with the English-speaking Maritimes, Ontario would be able to over-rule the wishes of Lower Canada (Quebec), those unprogressive Frenchmen. Besides an elected House of Commons, there would be an appointed body, the Senate, to insure stability. It could also function as a patronage mechanism, ._._._. ." Size: 8vo.
