Der Pindar, den Horaz gelesen hat, ist textlich gesehen ein Werk hellenistischer Editionspraxis, und pindarische Gedichte waren Gegenstand ausführlicher Kommentierung. Wie früher für Vergil und die antike Homerexegese werden diese Aspekte nun für Horaz und Pindar untersucht. Antike Pindarkommentare sind als Randnotizen [Scholien] in mittelalterlichen Pindarhandschriften erhalten. The present study focuses on the reception of the Greek poet Pindar [ca. 522-442 B.C.] by the Roman lyricist Horace [65-8 B.C.]. The Pindar text read by Horace was the work of Alexandrian philologists, and Pindarian poems were the subject of extensive annotation. As had been done before for Virgil and the Antique exegesis of Homer, these aspects are now considered for Horace and Pindar. Antique comments on Pindar survive as excerpts written on the margin of Medieval manuscripts [scholia]. Hitherto they were only accessible by a concordance list and an index, but now all scholia on a certain poem are assembled and commented on. The core chapter of the book is a commentary on passages of Horace's reception of Pindar. Additionally, the author deals with Horace as a reader of commentaries, the Pindar image in the scholia and in Horace, and the Pindarian character of the 4th book of odes. In their interpretation of Pindar, the Antique commentators focussed on rhetorical and biographic-anecdotic aspects as can be shown in Horace's odes on different levels.
