Condition: Very good. First Edition. Artist's book by the Danish surrealist, a student of Klee and Kandinsky at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Striking black and white drawings, with suggestive or elliptical captions ("Memory's flight" "I wander the sea"). From the brief introduction: "i tidens løb smeltede drøm og virkelighed sammen i en raekke billeder, hvortil der knytter sig enkelte losrevne ord." [Over time, dream and reality melted together in a series of images to which some loose words belong.]. Wraps. Small 8vo. Tan illustrated wraps, with faint soil and dampstaining. Moderate edgewear and scuffing, with some small tears to spine ends. This copy numbered 177. [24pp.] Very good.

This first edition catalogue from the Exposition Internationale Kubisme-Surrealisme de Copenhague, held from January 15 to 28, 1935, presents a significant moment in the history of Surrealism's international reach. Featuring an introduction by André Breton, the catalogue includes a list of works and numerous reproductions of paintings, sculptures, and photographs by iconic artists of the movement, including Salvador Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, Man Ray, René Magritte, Victor Brauner, and others. The exhibition was a key event in bringing Surrealism to Scandinavia, showcasing the avant-garde movement's profound impact on the visual arts. Edition originale de ce recueil de dessins surréalistes évoquant le rêve et la sexualité légendés en danois. Exemplaire n°67 après 10 exemplaires avec gouache originale et 25 ex. avec dessin original. Envoi autographe signé de l'artiste à Alberto Giacometti : "à Alberto Giacometti / mes salutations / Vilh. Bjerke Petersen". Les livres provenant de la bibliothèque d'Alberto Giacometti sont rares. Un exemplaire du même livre, dédicacé à Kandinsky est conservé dans le fonds de la Bibliothèque Kandinsky au Centre Georges Pompidou. Couverture brunie comportant quelques petites taches. Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen (1909-1957) est un peintre plasticien et théoricien danois. En 1938, le Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme le salue comme "le promoteur du mouvement surréaliste dans les pays scandinaves". Fondateur de la revue Linien avec Eiler Bille et Richard Mortensen en janvier 1934, Bjerke-Petersen se brouille rapidement avec ceux-ci à propos de son ouvrage Surrealismen. Ces derniers défendent le surréalisme abstrait alors que Bjerke-Petersen en propose une version figurative. En janvier 1935, Bjerke-Petersen en collaboration avec le suédois Erik Olson organise l'exposition internationale Kubisme-Surrealisme dont le catalogue sera préfacé par André Breton. Animateur de la revue Konkretion, il publie sa profession de foi "Pourquoi je suis surréaliste" dans Cahiers d'art, et participe avec ses amis aux expositions internationales de Londres et de Paris.
