First edition thus. xi, 1195pp., 10 pages of advertisements at the start of the book and a further 7 at the end (including the endpapers). The annual Mercantile Navy List was first published in 1849. From 1857 it lists the official number of every British registered ship afloat at that date, giving details of registry and ownership, and physical details of the ship. It continued until 1977, with a gap during the Second World War. The list is divided into three divisions: (1) Steam, (2) Motor, and (3) Sailing. Vessels which are fitted with auxiliary motors are included in both the Motor and Sailing divisions, their names being printed in italics. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and blind-stamped titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The bottom of the spine is lightly bumped and the top of the spine is more heavily bumped with a little damage to the cloth on the spine corners. The contents are tight and clean with a red stamp and a set of initials or a name written on page 9 of the advertisements and a stamp with the wording "Supplied for the Public Service" near the top edge of the title-page. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.
