Toned sheet, H 30.2cm x L 14.6cm, with three horizontal folds plus creasing to bottom margin. Single-sided printing. Does not mention a town for the performance (handbill was found in a Charleston, South Carolina book) but text implies that Prof. Strong's Orchestra is from the South - "Having been organized less than a year, its programs are said by the authorities of New York and Boston to be equal to any of that come from the South, and it is already recognized to be THE musical organization of our State." An online obituary for William Bogardus Strong certainly suggests the possibility of a southern locale noting that Strong "graduated from the University of Tennessee with the class of 1882. He then engaged in Y.M.C.A. work for a time and later followed teaching in a number of different places in the United States. He has taught in many southern states . . ." Another online source cites employment as Southwest Kansas College in Winfield, Kansas in the early 1890s with the obituary stating that Strong taught at Washington State College in Pullman, Washington from 1901 to 1915 thereafter moving to Dubois, Idaho. Despite the uncertain geography of the handbill's performance it remains an interesting example of an American touring orchestral company in the late 19th century.
