Peter Boklevsky is a major Russian illustrator. The creation of these paintings was preceded by extensive preparatory work by sketching types of peasants, merchants,… provincial clergy. Boklevsky set the goal of portrait playing heroes, not household paintings and landscape descriptions. Shown here are various types of pilgrims, monks, novices, dogmatists, peasant types. The first edition was published in 1880s and includes only some of the illustrations. The complete and high quality version of these illustrations appeared in 1934.
