Adelbert Von Chamisso scrisse questo romanzo fantastico raccontando le vicende umane di Peter Schlemihl, un poveraccio che accetta un patto con uno strano diavolo. Il baratto è la propria ombra in cambio di una borsa ricolma di monete d'oro. La perdita dell'ombra lo esilierà dal consesso degli uomini e lo costringerà a viaggiare, servendosi dei magici stivali delle sette leghe. Il romanzo che affonda nel mito del Faust, venne pubblicato nel 1813, prima del Faust di Goethe.
