The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind. The Binding is full red cloth with author's facsimile signature in gilt on the front board, gilt title, etc., on black background to the very slightly faded spine, front and rear boards showing some darkening, all corners square and sharp, and white endpapers unmarked except for a gift inscription on the front free endpaper. See photos. 559 pages. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". A powerful love story in the midst of the chaos that engulfed Russia from 1905 to near World War 2. The USSR refused to allow this novel to be published because it ran contrary to "socialist realism". It was smuggled out to Italy and first published there in 1957. The English translation is by Max Hayward and Marya Harari, with the "Poems of Yurii Zhivago" translated by Bernard Guilbert Guerney. It was the basis for the epic 1965 film of the same name directed by David Lean and starring Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Tom Courtenay, Alec Guiness, Ralph Richardson, and Rita Tushingham.
