Spontone eine humanistische Ausbildung in Sprachen, Philosophie, Mathematik und Musik erhalten hatte, entwickelte er eine besondere Affinität zur Musik. Beispielsweise komponierte er einige Madrigale, stand während seines zehnjährigen Aufenthalts in Ferrara unter dem Einfluß der Musikkultur der d' Este und widmete sich anschließend in Bologna musikwissenschaftlichen sowie -theoretischen Studien. Zudem baute er sich eine umfangreiche Musikbibliothek auf. - Bei dieser erstmals 1594 unter einem Pseudonym veröffentlichten Schrift handelt es sich um das Hauptwerk Bottrigaris, in dem er die Instrumente seiner Zeit und deren Stimmung systematisch erörtert. - Die dem Reprint zugrunde liegende zweite Ausgabe (Bellagamba, Bologna 1599) wurde mit Hinzufügung der Autorenschaft Bottrigaris gedruckt. - Mit einer ausführlichen wissenschaftlichen Einleitung von Kathi Meyer. - Einband am äussersten Rand minimal gebräunt, sonst sehr schönes Exemplar.
