Stahlstich v. Simon n. Cretius b. Paynes Universum, um 1845, 14,5 x 18,8 (H).
Published by Crawford & Paxton, Photographers, 72 First Street,, Albany, OR:, 1895
Seller: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, U.S.A.
One mounted albumen boudoir photographs sized 7.5 x 4.25 in. mounted on 8 x 5 in. printed tan studio mount, rounded corners, photographer's studio imprint on lower blank of boards, caption w/in negative at lower fore-edge (minor creasing at center, and lower corner, minor soiling), still a VG image. An original boudoir albumen photograph capturing the tragic crash of the Oregon Central & Eastern Railroads train on the Yaquina Line at Tunnel No. 1 resulting in the deaths of Conductor Campbell, with inset portrait upper left, and Brakeman Wilcox lower right. Founded originally in the 1870's by T. Egerton Hogg as a railroad line from Yaquina Bay through Corvallis and up the Santiam River to the base of the Cascades, the company defaulted in 1894, and was sold to Montana lumber baron Andrew Hammond for $ 100,000 who largely used the rail line for his Curtiss Lumber Company in Mill City. Half the locomotives were barely in operating condition, and the line was badly in need of repairs. Crawford (1850-1929) and his brother Orville produced stereoviews and boudoir cards of scenes from the Pacific Coast through the Columbia River Gorge, up to the summit of Mount Hood, chiefly based in the Albany area, and Paxton (1833-1902) was his partner off-and-on in the photo studio from 1887 until his death in partnership.
Published by Imperial View Series, N.W. Cor. Third & Morrison, Feb. 11, 1890., Portland, OR:, 1890
Seller: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, U.S.A.
Oblong boudoir-sized albumen photograph, sized 7.75 x 4.5 in. mounted on 8.5 x 5.25 in. studio board, gilt lettering on recto, title & location in ink manuscript on verso (minor rubbing, very minor edgewear, slight over-exposure to fore-edges), still VG bright image. A very nice early birds-eye photograph shot of Portland, Oregon, and East Portland before the merger of the two municipalities with Albina into one City a year later. This was about the time of the unofficial opening of the Portland Heights Cable Car which ran from Irving Street near Union Station past the Vista Bridge into Washington Park, with a vast trestle bridge spanning over 1000 feet along Spring. McAlpin (b. 1856) first opened his studio with Frank Abell, but then joined with Charles Y. Lamb, the printer and photo retoucher for Abell from 1883-1887, and they operated for several years as Imperial Gallery.

Seller: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, U.S.A.
Two mounted albumen boudoir photographs sized 7.75 x 4.25 in. mounted on 8 x 5 in. printed tan studio mounts, rounded corners, photographer's studio imprint on lower blank of boards, w/ News Dealer stamp on verso for J.C. Young, C.P.R.R., Yaquina City, Oregon on verso (minor dustsoiling, edgewear, minor rubbing), still VG images w/ mostly good contrast. These two scarce original boudoir albumen photos capture one of the Oregon & California Railroad's (later Southern Pacific) wrecks near Albany, Oregon in 1889. The first captures the steam locomotive on its' side, piled up cars in the background, and crowd milling around the wreck site. The second shows the still wrecked locomotive, now restored upright, presumably being restored to working condition, and re-attached to cars with crowd standing on and seated next to the train at the Albany rail station. Crawford (1850-1929) produced stereoviews and boudoir cards of scenes from the Pacific Coast through the Columbia River Gorge, up to the summit of Mount Hood, chiefly based in the Albany area, and Paxton (1833-1902) was his partner off-and-on in the photo studio from 1887 until his death in partnership.

Photograph. Condition: Very Good. Portrait photograph [14.5 cm x 20 cm] on a C. R. Savage mount [17.5 cm x 25 cm]. Subjects unknown. Written in pen, below the image: "Ho, for the Salt Lake! Aug. 8th 1894." A striking portrait image from the renowned Mormon pioneer photographer, Charles Roscoe Savage, who is best known for his images of the linking of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. Savage was a prolific photographer of the American West in general, and of Utah and the Mormon experience in particular. He thoroughly documented the early settlement and development of Salt Lake City, including the long and arduous construction of the Mormon Temple over several decades. He also photographed many Indigenous North Americans, and is credited for taking the first photographs of what would later become Zion National Park.
