Over Dzjan: Een klein volk in de barre woestijn van Midden-Azi? heeft zichzelf Dzjan ('ziel'of 'leventje') genoemd, omdat het niets anders bezit dan een ziel, een leven. Dit 'volk' is een samenraapsel van armoedzaaiers uit alle windstreken, vegeterend aan de uiterste rand van het bestaan. Het leve…n is voor hen een ondraaglijke kwelling waarvan alleen de dood verlossing biedt. E?n van hen, door toeval in Moskou terechtgekomen en daar opgegroeid, keert terug naar zijn geboortestreek om zijn volk te redden. Hij denkt het een nieuw, gelukkig bestaan te kunnen bieden. De Russische schrijver Andrej Platonov (1899-1951) schreef Dzjan omstreeks 1935. De publicatie werd afgewezen en pas in 1964, dertien jaar na zijn dood, is het voor het eerst verschenen. De roman werd enthousiast ontvangen en vele malen herdrukt. Toen aan het eind van de jaren negentig het archief van Platonov toegankelijk werd, bleek dat de censuur op bijna iedere bladzijde van de tussen 1964 en 1978 in de Sovjet-Unie verschenen uitgaven veranderingen had aangebracht en dat het slot was aangepast. Dzjan geldt als een hoogtepunt in Platonovs oeuvre. De huidige, geheel herziene vertaling gaat uit van de tekst in het in 2010 te Moskou verschenen verzameld werk. ; Gave pzaperback met fris en schoon binnenwerk; buitenkant boekbklok (snee en bovenkant) met roestvlekjes.
