Georges Braque (illustrator). Georges Braque & Pierre Reverdy - Une Aventure Méthodique Fernand Mourlot, Paris, M.CM.XLIX (1949) Exemplar no. 5 / 250, signed in pencil by Georges Braque and Pierre Reverdy on the justification page. A highly desirable deluxe issue of one of the most elegant post-war French livres d'artiste, uniting two major figures of 20th-century culture: Georges Braque, co-founder of Cubism, and poet Pierre Reverdy, one of the defining literary voices of the Paris avant-garde. Reverdy's essay, dedicated entirely to Braque, reflects a friendship and artistic dialogue spanning decades. Printed on vélin d'Arches, the edition was strictly limited to 250 numbered copies, plus a small hors-commerce issue in Roman numerals. All numbered examples were signed by both artist and author, making these copies especially sought after. This monumental folio contains: Original color lithograph frontispiece by Braque, printed in three colors, with yellow and red hand-applied highlights 26 original lithographs in the text by Braque 12 additional hors-texte reproductions after Braque's paintings Original illustrated wrappers / portfolio presentation case Present example, No. 5, is from the very beginning of the numbered tirage, an attractive low-number copy seldom encountered. The signatures appear clear and well placed, with strong presentation value. The hand-finished frontispiece is particularly important: examples with fresh, vivid hand-coloring are prized, as each carries slight individuality from the finishing process. Format: large folio (approx. 44.5 x 33.5 cm) Paper: Arches wove paper Publisher: Fernand Mourlot, Paris Date: 1949 Why collectors seek this work: One of Braque's finest illustrated books of the late 1940s True collaboration between artist and poet, both personally signing the edition Large-format deluxe production by Mourlot, legendary Paris lithographer Contains a substantial corpus of original lithographs, not merely reproductions Scarce complete copies in original case, especially low-number examples Market position: Complete signed examples in strong condition are increasingly difficult to source, particularly copies retaining the case and vivid frontispiece. This title is considered one of the cornerstone Braque illustrated books and remains highly collectible internationally.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Authors: Daisetz T. Suzuki, E. Herrigel, Georges Braque. Illustrator : George Braque Publisher : Paris Louis Broder,1960. Artist's book "Le Tir à l'Arc" (The Art of Archery). Selected texts from D.T Suzuki and E. Herrigel Le Zen dans l art cavaleresque 1955 and aphorisms and thoughts by George Braque from his own notebooks Cahiers d Art de 1917 a 1952 . Illustrated by Braque with eight lithographs, of which six in color, one in black, and one in pink and white printed across the spread endpapers with a mirrored composition; together with a black and white etching on the front wrappers and two woodcuts on gray paper, also reproduced on the protective chemise and box. Limited edition of 165 numbered copies, printed on vélin de chiffon handmade at the Moulin d Ambert, with cover wrappers in Antaimoro paper. Loose as issued, preserved in the original silk-covered hard chemise, and housed within the original Japanese-style silk folding case with ivory clasp. Braque s images fuse seamlessly with the accompanying Zen texts, creating a visual meditation on focus, intuition, and the empty mind that illuminates the writings of D.T. Suzuki and Eugen Herrigel. Herrigel s Zen in the Art of Archery, a classic account of his six-year immersion in Japanese archery during the 1920s, explores the discipline as a gateway to understanding Zen Buddhism, while Suzuki, one of the most influential figures in bringing Zen thought to the West, provides the philosophical and spiritual framework that illuminates archery as a contemplative path. Woven into this dialogue are Braque s own aphorisms and reflections, with their emphasis on nuance, intuition, and the quiet interior space from which art emerges. Together, these elements create a rare and compelling bridge between modern abstract art and Zen philosophy. In very good condition but some age spotting on the paper inside. A small restoration has been carried out on the top inch of the spine of the endpaper, barely visible. Reference: Dora Vallier 153. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. Limitierte Ausgabe. Braque. - Saint-John Perse. L'ordre des oiseaux. Paris, Au Vent d'Arles, 1962. Qu.-Folio. 54 S. mit 12 orig. Farbradierungen von Georges Braque, davon 9 ganzseitig (42:54 cm). H a l b m a r o q u i n mit Seidenbezug und Collage (Papierschnitt und Tusche) auf Vorderdeckel, sign. Meistereinband von Jean Duval (1894-1964, Flety 65 f. ), Schuber.

The author Jouhandeau struggled all his life, and alternately celebrated, his homosexuality and his Catholicism. Much of his work reflects these passions and ordeals. Braque, the celebrated French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor, is best remembered for his "most important contribution to the history of art was his role in the development of what became known as Cubism. In this Braque's work is intertwined with that of his collaborator Pablo Picasso, especially from 1908 to 1912. For a long time it was impossible to distinguish their respective contributions to Cubism, for example in the development of Collage, while Picasso's fame and notoriety overshadowed the quiet life of Braque" (MoMA online). "Descente aux Enfers" is one of the last books he illustrated, and includes four fine lithographs depicting birds. Signed by Author(s).
