Breza, geboren 1905, hat schon mit seinem ersten Werk, dem psychologischen Roman "Adam Grywald" (1936) Anerkennung gefunden. Breza besticht durch seinen scharfen Intellekt, durch hohe sprachliche Kultur und psychologische Meisterschaft. Zu seinen besten Werken gehören außer "Audienz in Rom" der preisgekrönte Roman "Die Mauern von Jerichow" (1946), der Roman "Das Gastmahl des Bathasar" (1952), für den er den Staatspreis für Literatur erhielt, und die Erzählung "In der Schlinge" (1953). 1960 veröffentlichte Breza einen essayistisch angelegten Band über den Vatikan: "Das Bronzetor, Römisches Tagebuch". In gewissem Sinn ist "Audienz in Rom" die Romanform jenes Werkes. Breza wurde in viele Sprachen übersetzt, u. a. ins Französische, Russische, Hebräische und Ungarische (Umschlagtext); wie angegeben.
