The Quaker family of Fairbank flourished as surveyors and mapmakers in Sheffield for several generations.They were actively engaged in local enclosures, railways, canals, roads and waterworks, their activities extended beyond Sheffield to cover South Yorkshire,and many of the adjoining counties.Their printed maps of the city of 1771 & 1797 are well know and expensive, but original examples of their work, hard to come by. The companies papers,maps and records being in the Sheffield City Archives. A copy of T. Walter Hall's definitive The Fairbanks of Sheffield 1688-1848. is also available.
