Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. 8vo. pp 189. Frontis portrai + 13 illus. No date but circa 1908 as she visits the Great World Convention in Boston October 1906 RARE. No copies found at WorldCat (OCLC) the worldĠs largest library catalogue. It is listed there with a copy lacking the portrait but no library holdings are shown. Info found: 'In original publishers green cloth let guilt at spinal on front with illustration of Lucy Broad with her bicycle on the cover (slightly faded) very good indeed condition. 1897 she accompanied an ailing friend to the Riviera for ten months; the friend recovered and Lucy journied on over the Apennines to Florence on her bicycle. In 1898 she sailed for South Africa (her bike aboard) and spent three years in and around Durban, as a Methodist missionary and lecturer for the WCTU. She awarded herself two cycling holidays during this time: one in Madagascar and the other in neighbouring Mauritius. A two-year tour of Australia followed next (with brief asides in Tasmania and New Zealand), and a voyage home via Samoa and Fiji. A proud reckoning of 100,000 miles in ten years. the excitement of evangelism and preaching was only matched by a Òthirst for speedÓ and love of Òescapades.Ó These escapades included lonely African bicycle rides, getting lost on the brink of Tasmanian precipices at dead of night, and being washed away whilst wading across a swollen tropical river, losing not her life but her brolly, cape, handbag, and (most inconveniently) one boot. Such a zestful missionary must have been hard to resist.'.
