Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Cover by Danial Brown (illustrator). 2nd Edition. We were sold this book by an online seller who listed it as "signed by author." As we knew Irwin Schiff and own several books signed by him, however, we immediately recognized the bold, felt-tip signature to title page here is NOT that of author Irwin Schiff, but rather that of Irwin Schiff's son, stockbroker and financial commentator Peter Schiff, long known for advising his clients to diversify out of investments denominated in inflation-prone U.S. dollars. (Yes, it would have been helpful had Peter inscribed "In my father's absence . . ." or something of the sort, but this one is "name only.") This is a 2000 paperback reprinting of Schiff's book, originally published in hardcover by Arlington House in 1976. Prophetically, Schiff wrote to warn that federal taxes and regulation must inevitably undermine America's industrial base. Even earlier, in the 1960s, Schiff had warned that divorcing the U.S. dollar from any linkage to gold or silver (the final step being elimination of the "Reserve Requirement") would result in massive inflation, which is in effect a draconian, regressive tax on the savings of the poor and middle class. Testifying before Congress, Sen. William Proxmire, Treasury Secretary Henry Fowler, and Federal Reserve Chairman William McChesney Martin assured the public none of that would happen. Those contrary claims and predictions, Schiff notes in his introduction to this Year 2000 printing, "have proven to be blatant nonsense." In October of 2015, Irwin Schiff died in federal prison at the age of 87, of a cancer contracted there and not optimally treated, having been jailed for exercising his First Amendment rights on the illegal and unconstitutional manner in which the IRS enforces the "federal income tax," and on the federal government's Social Security scheme (which author Schiff dubbed "The World's Biggest Chain Letter,") without ever being allowed by the federal courts to substantially present his findings to a jury -- citing chapter and verse of their own law and the relevant Supreme Court rulings -- or to confront and cross-examine agents of the Treasury, the "IRS" or the Social Security Administration (his accusers) at length on their claims for the lawfulness and constitutionality of their current collection and enforcement regimes (since of course such a defendant can't be allowed to present a substantive defense over the course of several days, lest the courtroom be "turned into a circus" -- a week of federal judge Kent Dawson's handsomely compensated time being far more valuable than 20 years of the defendant's.) Copies signed by either author Schiff or his son are uncommon. 368 pp. including Index, here reduced from $95.
