Slight marking on prelims. x, 84 pages clean and tight. PREFACE: Most people today associate the name of Salomons only with a figure vaguely remembered and distantly connected with the story of Anglo-Jewish emancipation. The truth is somewhat different, and a great deal more interesting. David Salomons (1797-1873), created a baronet in 1869, was in fact the chief protagonist in the final battle to secure for his people the political rights enjoyed by other Englishmen. The Jewish community of his day encouraged his efforts, and-to some extent- organized support. But it was he, and he alone, who first took up the battle in public, fought out the issues in court, and (exposing himself to considerable penalties) entered and spoke for his cause in Parliament. His nephew and heir, David Lionel Salomons (1851-1925), is a far more neglected figure. His interests, both intellectual and practical, were in science, and as a scientist his range and talents were remarkable. He was an electrician, an engineer, an expert on motor mechanics when few Englishmen knew what a motor car was, a photographer of note, a craftsman in wood, ivory and metal, and one of the first to devise a system of automatic signalling on railways. His achievements and those of his uncle have been described in David Salomons, Albert Hyamson's biography of the family, and more concisely by Dr. James Parkes, in his Three David Salomons at Broomhill. Broomhill was presented to the Kent County Council by the second baronefs last surviving child, Mrs. Vera Bryce Salomons, in 1938, and is now a home for convalescent women. The two memento rooms were opened to the public in the same year, and a short handlist [In Remembrance. David Salomons House) was provided for visitors. The main object of the present catalogue is to enlarge and replace the handlist, and to provide a souvenir of Broomhill. Sir D . L . Salomons published his own guides to the house in 1896 and 1898, though only the two memento rooms (the Old Library and Sculpture Room) have been preserved in the style of that period. The wallpaper in the Old Library is as it was eighty years ago, and the original electric light fittings have been left as a reminder that this was one of the first private houses in England to be lit by electricity. The library cupboards, also original fittings, contain over 180 books, pamphlets, periodicals and photograph albums which were catalogued in the first handlist. That list and the two biographies mentioned above have proved extremely useful in the course of preparing this catalogue, but my main debt of gratitude is to Mrs. Bryce Salomons, whose knowledge of her family's history and help with the entries have been invaluable. Many others have provided information on different points, and I should like to thank in particular Miss I. L. Holden (the present Matron of David Salomons House), Miss E. Styles and Miss Mabel Roberts; Mr. Ronald D'Arcy Hart; Sir Henry d'Avigdor-Goldsmid, Bt.; Mr. I. Finestein; Mr. Harold Levy; Mr. V. D. Lipman; Mr. C. A. Lusted; Mr. Alfred Rubens; Rabbi S. D. Sassoon; Mr. I. Schachar; Mr. D. Spector; Dr. Cecil Roth; Mr. M. C. Sedgwick, formerly Curator of the Montagu Motor Museum; Lt.-Col. T. M. Simmons, Mr. P. L. Sumner and Miss M. K. Weston, of the Science Museum; and lasdy Professor O. Kurz, of the Warburg Institute, who first suggested that I should undertake this work. Even with the help of so many, errors and omissions are bound to have occurred, and I should be grateful to any reader of the catalogue for pointing these out in as much detail as possible. M. D.
