Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, viii + 397 pp. Very Good, with sunned spine and light edgewear. From Foreword: Gone for a Burton was written during 1942 and 1943 while I was on active service. The manuscript was released by the censorship for publication in 1945. The period of the story belongs to 1941. It is right and proper, I fell, that readers should bear this in mind, since R.A.F. practice and procedure, in certain respects, have been considerably changed during the four-year interval which has elapsed between the story and its publication. I am indebted primarily to Stan Houghton for the general elan of the tale; and to Flying Officer Max Morison for valuable assistance in other respects. There is also the contribution made by innumerable members of the Royal Air Force, which I cannot define, though I have tried to express it. Aviation, Military History, World War II, WWII. nslic.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. 159 pp, 7 1/2" H. "Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is in Field Security Personnel. He joined up 1939. Being a soldier is a new experience for him. 'F.S.P.' begins on a parade ground; it ends on Dunkirk beaches; in between it says a lot that has not been said before. Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture. There is Dunkirk with the soldiers waiting patiently on the beaches as the town blazes and the bombs fall. There is the 'honour and humanity' we are fighting for, and the new world we hope for. Indeed there is as much seriousness as of laughter in this book; and every reader will find himself in the company not only of a lively jester, but also of an original and thoughtful personality." Several small creases at bottom corner of title page - some indentation on a few subsequent pages, page leaf 13/14 has bee roughly trimmed at bottom edge, small shallow bump on front edge of spine, light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom and top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - small faint stain on top . Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a piece missing at bottom of front panel, several edge tears (one with old tape on inside) and edge chips light browning - a little more at edges and on spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.
