First Edition
Bruce Gaffron (illustrator). Scarce wartime first edition of Dawn of the Space Age by Harry Harper, published by Sampson Low and produced to full War Economy Standard during the final years of World War II. Harper, one of the earliest aviation correspondents and a member of the British Interplanetary Society, outlines the scientific possibilities of spaceflight long before the launch of Sputnik. This is a non-technical, BIS-approved presentation of rockets, manned space-vessels, and interplanetary travel to the Moon, Mars, and Venus. The red cloth boards are clean and bright, and the binding remains tight. The original dust jacket shows rubbing, scratches, and chips along the edges but remains complete and visually striking with its early rocket illustration by Bruce Gaffron. A rare surviving copy of an important pre-space-race futurist work. Author: Harry Harper Publisher: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd., London Year: ca. 1944-45 (War Economy Standard printing) Special attributes: War Economy Edition, original dust jacket, early British Interplanetary Society endorsement Topic: Space exploration, early rocketry, futurism, aviation history Subject: Interplanetary travel, rocket science, history of flight, British Interplanetary Society Keywords: early space age, wartime printing, Sampson Low, BIS, futurist science, vintage spaceflight, rocket history Condition: Very good minus. Clean red cloth, tight binding, pages toned but clean. Dust jacket shows rubbing, edge wear, small chips, and scratches but remains complete.
