Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Sketches , Map (illustrator). Second Printing. This "Pictorial Account of the Kauri Timber Industry in New Zealand" is a comapion volume to Bruce Hawyard's study of the Kauri Gum industry. The Kauri timber was an early economic discovery by seafarers in the late 1700s and early 1800s, when the younger trees were prized for use as spars. Confined to the northern third of the North Island the Kauri was soon recognised by early settlers as an excellent timber for dwellings and other strutures. Quickly an important idustry develped around the Kauri forests. Originally covering 1.2 million hectares, this area had been reduced by 75per cent by the late 1800s and today only 4000 hectares remain of these majestic giants of the forest, mostly in protected parks and reserves. Mainly pictorial, with extended captions telling the story of the Kauri industry, the feature of the booklet is its excellent collection of contemporary photographys. Part of a "Pictures from the Past" series, it was first published 1991, with this second printing 1994. 48 pages, b/w photos throughout, sketches, map showing the area where the Kauri flourished. Pictorial card covers VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions.

Soft cover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustrator). Third. For New Zealand, from the 1870s to the 1930s, the recovery and export of Kauri gum was an important contributor to the country's economy, At the height of the industry, around 1900, an estimated 20,000 people were engaged on the gumfields, with half working full-time. In the 100 years from 1850 gum valued at 25million pounds was exported, the total weight being 450,000 tons and for the first 50 years it was the Auckland province's most valuable export, ahead of kauri timber, gold and wool. Hayward's book tells the story of this trade, those who worked in it, how they lived and the uses for the gum. This is mainly contained in the extended captions to the dozens of excellent historic photographs used to illustrate the booklet, which is part of the Bush Press "Pictures From the Past" series. First published 1982, re-set new edition1989 with this reprint 1994. 48 pages, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, up to three on some pages, map showing gumfield locations and graph indicating gum production trends. Illustrated card covers VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions.

"Granite and Marble: A Guide to Building Stones in New Zealand" explains how different types of stone are formed, used, and valued in New Zealand construction, with a focus on clarity and practical detail. The book introduces the three main rock types?igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic?and explains how each contributes to New Zealand's building heritage. Granite, for example, is an igneous rock formed deep underground from slowly cooled magma. It's made mostly of quartz and feldspar, which gives it strength and a speckled appearance. Marble, on the other hand, is a metamorphic rock created when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. This process causes the minerals to recrystallize, forming the smooth, veined patterns that make marble so popular for decorative use.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Geological Society of New Zealand Guidebook Number 15. As new. Signed by Haywood and Kenny. Karst is a special type of landscape that is formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks, including limestone and dolomite. Karst landscapes are often spectacularly scenic areas. The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki on the West Coast are examples of a Kaast landscape. Karst in Stone has been written for conservation officers and advocates, planners and resource consent granting authorities, quarry managers, forestry managers and private landholders. It tries to give voice to the rocks and advocate for the beautiful, yet highly vulnerable, karst landforms of New Zealand. Full of photographs.
