Je nai probablement jamais surmonté cela, et cela a également été déterminant pour mon art. Ainsi sexprimait Edvard Munch vers 1920. Les thèmes de la maladie et de la mort, mais aussi ceux de la famille, de lanxiété, de lamour qui leur sont si intimement liés, forment en effet la trame de l½uvre de Munch. Souvent sinueux, spontané, rapide et nerveux, il suffit à cerner lexpression psychologique de son modèle, sa richesse émotive. Lartiste concentre son attention sur lessence même du sujet et la couleur, retenue pour sa valeur symbolique, se libère de sa fonction de représentation au profit de sa fonction dexpression. Nous voulons autre chose que la simple copie de la nature. Nous voudrions essayer de créer un art qui apporte quelque chose aux hommes. De telles convictions sont exprimées par Munch dès 1890 et marqueront son ½uvre dune grande intensité émotionnelle. S.E. M. John Bjornebye, ambassadeur de Norvège, nous a fait lhonneur de son patronage. Quil veuille bien trouver ici lexpression de notre profonde reconnaissance. La centaine d½uvres exposées proviennent du Musée Munch dOslo; cest tout naturellement à son directeur, M. Gunnar Sorensen, ainsi quà M. Arne Eggum, directeur honoraire, témoin des prémices de ce projet, que sadresse notre plus vive gratitude pour avoir accepté de nous prêter cet ensemble de prestige. M. Magne Bruteig, conservateur de ce même musée, est le commissaire scientifique de cette exposition et lauteur du catalogue qui laccompagne. Cet événement naurait pu voir le j o 11 r sans sa collaboration éclairée; nous len remercions bien sincèrement.
