Au centre de ces poèmes, qui composent en vers un authentique roman de formation, se trouve la maison de famille rouverte après bien des années, témoin de la vérité enfantine comme des plus indicibles angoisses, et qui, au fil du livre, se confond avec l'ensemble d'un territoire - le lac Majeur, la plaine lombarde et le mont Rose -, lieux de Périples quasi archéologiques et d'initiations. Par sensibilité comme par culture, Franco Buffoni aurait pu devenir un poète élégant et cynique, ou laisser libre cours à une fantaisie désengagée, mais la complexité de son univers reflète une lutte contre lui-même autant qu'une morale du secret. Lorsqu'on lui demande ce qu'est pour lui la poésie, il cite souvent une scène de la parodie d'Hamlet écrite par Jules Laforgue : Hamlet prie Horatio de le précéder, afin de dire à sa place, au moment d'entrer en scène, ces mots qui le tuent.
