Par sensibilité comme par culture, Franco Buffoni aurait pu devenir un poète élégant et cynique, ou laisser libre cours à une fantaisie désengagée, mais la complexité de son univers reflète une lutte contre lui-même autant qu'une morale du secret. Lorsqu'on lui demande ce qu'est pour lui la poésie, il cite souvent une scène de la parodie d'Hamlet écrite par Jules Laforgue : Hamlet prie Horatio de le précéder, afin de dire à sa place, au moment d'entrer en scène, ces mots qui le tuent.
