Condition: VERY GOOD. First edition. The first book in this popular, and now quite hard-to-find, series. Foreword by Helen Rogers Reid which addresses the inequality in attitude when it comes to hiring young women versus young men, even when the woman is as or more qualified. In 1911, the author, Emma Bugbee, was the first woman hired by the New York Herald as a reporter, and she worked there for 55 years. Her assignment was to cover a weeks-long march of suffragists from New York City to Albany. She was also a founder of the Newspaper Women's Club of New York, and one of just a "few prominent female reporters who sought to expand the role of women in the male-dominated world of journalism that existed when she began her career. She was best known for her intimate coverage of Eleanor Roosevelt, beginning in 1933 amidst the early days of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's terms of office and ending with a reminiscence of the former First Lady, written on the day of her death in 1962." VERY GOOD in Good dust jacket protected in a removable archival cover. The book itself shows a slight hint of shelf rubbing along the edges, last two pages of text have publisher's flaws one page too short but not obstructive of text and the other too long with some chips from the margins, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. The dust jacket shows a large chip from the foot of the spine, marginal chipping and creasing additionally, otherwise is not price-clipped remaining bright, colorful, and distinct. As pictured.

Bound in finely woven beige linen cloth and stamped brightly in red and black lettering on the front boards and on the spine. A near fine copy. Very clean and tight throughout; virtually unread. Bright red topstaining. With the previous owner's name and date discreetly stamped in the corner of the front paste-down and the bottom of the front endpaper; and with "Nov. 1, 1939" stamped on the title page. In the scarce original pictorial dust jacket featuring Peggy interviewing a Beefeater with the Tower of London in the background. With the original price of $2.00 at the top of the inside front flap; and a charming photo of Emma Bugbee and a lengthy biographical sketch of her on the rear inside flap. With sun fading to the spine and light edge-rubbing and chipping to the top and bottom of the spine ends. An unaccountably scarce volume in the Career Book Series. Emma Bugbee (1888 1981) was an American suffragist and journalist. She participated in and reported on the 1912 Suffrage Hike from New York City to Albany, New York. She was born in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Barnard College in 1909 and taught Greek courses at a high school in Methuen, Massachusetts.[1][2] She became a reporter for the New York Tribune, later the New York Herald Tribune.[3] She was the first woman reporter to be hired for the Herald's city room.[4][5]In 1914, she covered the Suffrage hike from Manhattan to Albany, New York.[1][4] In 1976, she moved to Warwick, Rhode Island where she died on October 6, 1981.
