In this magnificent tribute to their native land, two Oklahomas, photographer David Fitzgerald and writer Bill Burchardt, take you from the banks of the Cimarron to the Red River Valley, from rolling prairies to verdant pine forests and cedar glades, from the heights of Black Mesa to the tunnels of Alabaster Caverns. Through these vivid words and pictures you will reach into every corner of this great territory, whose soil has been explored by the soldiers of Coronado and LaSalle, marked by the wheels of wagon trains on the way to California, touched by the Indian tribes on their Trail of Tears, beaten by the herds of cattle on the Chisholm Trail, raced across by the coaches of the Butterfield Stage Lines, and staked out by pioneer settlers and impatient homesteaders'who beat the signal for the rush to claims and earned the name of Sooners. Here you will discover the memorial to the Pioneer \Voman, the monument to Will Rogers, the statue to the riders of the range and the oil wells on the capitol grounds, and the redbud tree near the cabin of Sequoyah, creator of the Cherokee alphabet. Fitzgerald traveled over 24,000 miles within the state taking thousands of photographs to capture the beauty, color and changing qualities of land and sky in every light and every season. He climbed the rocky slopes of the Quartz Mountains by moonlight in order to photograph a spectacular sunrise? a sight probably last seen by the Indians who once meditated on these ancient peaks. He drove into the face of blizzards, felt the force of dust storms and caught the darkening clouds of thunder and rain. And he paused in quiet wonder to record the transient loveliness of native wildflowers. This is the land that inspired the great musical which gave the whole world a wonderful feeling through the magic of its songs. Now, through this inspired book you can see the wondrous beauty and sense the magic of this very special land called Oklahoma. XX David Fitzgerald, a native Oklahoman, began his career as an artist and illustrator and his creative perception and color sense continue to influence his work with the camera. During his more than 15 years as a professional photographer, the quality of his impressions of the Oklahoma landscape has prompted critics to note that "the painter's eye remains much in evidence." Bill Burchardt is a nationally-known author, who was editor of Oklahoma Today magazine for 22 years. He is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and has served as national president of Western Writers of America.
