Importante testo sulle cerimonie ecclesiastiche, opera del dignitario religioso Johannes Burckard, italianizzato in Giovanni Burcardo (Haslach, 1450-1506), che fu anche vescovo di Pienza e Montalcino. "La più importante [delle sue opere] è certamente il famoso "Liber notarum", il diario della sua attività di maestro delle cerimonie, che il Burckard cominciò il giorno del suo ingresso in carica e condusse fino alla sua morte. Il diario, iniziato per ovviare alle necessità pratiche di raccogliere materiali utili all'esercizio delle sue funzioni (contiene infatti descrizioni minuziose di cerimonie sacre celebrate in occasione di concistori, conclavi, canonizzazioni ecc. e dell'etichetta della corte pontificia osservata nelle varie circostanze come l'accoglienza di principi, ambasciatori e altri dignitari laici ed ecclesiastici), assume particolare importanza per l'inserzione di notizie su avvenimenti contemporanei e sulla vita romana del tempo che fanno di esso, anche per la spregiudicatezza con cui sono riferite, una fonte preziosa e sicura per la storia dei pontificati di Innocenzo VIII, Alessandro VI in particolare, Pio III e Giulio II. Il diario del quale fu assai presto riconosciuto il grande interesse storico fu usato ampiamente dal Raynaldi per i suoi "Annales ecclesiastici" ed ebbe una larga fortuna editoriale. Le prime edizioni parziali si ebbero già nel secolo XVII. Il Godefroy ne pubblicò alcuni brani riguardanti il Savonarola sotto il titolo "Extrait du journal d'un maître des cérémonies de la cour de Rome" in appendice a una edizione dei "Mémoires del Commynes" (Paris 1649), mentre il Leibniz, che si servì di un manoscritto conservato a Wolfenbüttel, stampò un ampio estratto con il titolo "Specimen historiae arcanae sive anecdotae de vita Alexandri VI papae seu excerpta ex diario Iohannis Burchardi" (1697). Seguirono tra il Sette e l'Ottocento altre edizioni, sempre parziali, a cura dell'Eccard, del Foncemagne, del De Bréquigny, del Cimber e del Gennarelli" (Ingeborg Walter in "Dizionario biografico Treccani", vol.XV). > Rosa in "Archivio storico italiano" (1875), 490, "La vita intima di Roma e della corte papale raccolse il Gregorovius segnatamente dal "Diarium" di Burkard da Strasburgo, che fu cerimoniere papale dal 1483 al 1506, di cui l'originale sta nel Vaticano chiuso ai profani, e la copia più completa da lui esaminata è in casa Chigi, copia non veduta dal Gennarelli quando pubblicò la prima parte di quel Diario a Fuirenze nel 1855". 700 gr.
