    Very good in pictorial cloth with some wear along the gutter of the front boards. Light soiling to the cloth. In A very good minus dust jacket with some chips and a closed tear one the front panel. Small chip at the top of the rear panel. This copy has been inscribed by Forester: "Fred McCarthy in memory of a very peasant Friday the 13th--Feb 1953 with best wishes from C.S. Forester (underlined). on the front endpaper. VG-/G+ in illustrated paper-covered boards printed in yellow, blue, and grey. With faint outline of dampstain on the lower portion of the rear panel. In a heavily chipped dusjacket printed with the same scene: the doctor looking curiously at the three maiden ladies seated on pillows at the gaming table. Several closed tears; with small pieces missing at the top of the spine and at the bottom of the front panel. Scarce signed. First Edition. Stated: "First Edition 1944" on the copyright page. Stated "First Edition, 1944." The true First & Only Edition.
