(Wolfstieg, 4868).

Clay, ca. 133 x 65 x 28 mm. A large, complete pillow-shaped tablet of biconvex cross-section, columns of cuneiform text to both broad faces and two side edges. An Old Babylonian letter from Iluni, ruler of Eshnunna, to Warassa, King of Der (now Tell Aqar, near modern al-Badrah), both of whom were younger contemporaries of Hammurabi. The communication touches upon several matters of regional politics at a volatile time when Eshnunna was seeking to preserve a modicum of independence while already de facto under the rule of Hammurabi of Babylon. - The message itself comprises 64 lines. Iluni begins with formulaic greetings invoking Tishpak, the god of the city of Eshnunna: "May the Sun god and Tishpak keep you in good health forever!" The continuation ("I kissed the flour of Ishtaran that you made me carry and as I prayed for my life, I prayed for your life") shows the relationship between writer and recipient to be excellent. - In the body of the letter, Iluni addresses three different topics. Firstly, he justifies his delay in sending to Der soldiers that Warassa required of him: as Iluni explains, an Elamite embassy occurred in Eshnunna, and he underlines how much the interests of Der depend on those of his own city. The second subject concerns a group of inhabitants of Der who were arrested at the border of Eshnunna; Iluni blames them for not going to greet him. Lastly, Iluni tackles a question of the diplomatic relationship between Eshnunna, Der, Elam and "the troop of the Sea" - a reference to a new political force which was constituted in the south of Mesopotamia. It is in this context that Iluni announces that he wrote to the Elamite Kukannashur (Kuknashur), a useful point that establishes a new synchronism between Mesopotamian history and that of Elam. - While Eshnunna had managed to survive as an independent kingdom into the Old Babylonian period, it had been effectively brought under Hammurabi's suzerainty around 1762 BCE, after having sided with an Elamite rebellion that failed. Ultimately, Iluni would prove unsuccessful in navigating the various regional cross-currents and asserting even local authority over Eshnunna: according to an Akkadian inscription from Kish (Tell Uhaimir), now kept at the Yale Babylonian Collection, New Haven, he was defeated and put to death by Shamshu-iluna, Hammurabi's son and successor ("Iluni, the king of Eshnunna, who did not heed his words, he defeated, in a neck-stock he led him away, and his life he devoured", YBC 02296, surface a, col. 3, lines 5-11). - A few portions of the surface rubbed, affecting legibility, but generally well preserved. - From a specialised collection of cuneiform texts, the property of a London gentleman and housed in London before 1988. Thence by descent to family members. Examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern Archaeology, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. - For Iluni see J.-R. Kupper, art. "Iluni", in: Reallexikon der Assyriologie u. vorderasiatischen Archäologie, vol. 5 (1976-80), p. 63. For Warassa see N. Morello, art. "Warassa (2)", in: ibid., vol. 14 (2014), pp. 644f.
